How much does it cost to register a trademark in Colombia in 2026?

Por el equipo de +Melo Agency · Revisado por Carolina Escobar Hoyos, fundadora ·

Registering your trademark with Colombia's Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) gives you the exclusive right to use it in Colombia. The total cost has two parts: the official fee paid to the SIC and the fee for professional support.

Official SIC fees for 2026

Figures from SIC Resolution 6167 of 2026. B Corps (BIC companies) also get a reduced rate, and SMEs that complete SIC training or advisory programs can unlock extra discounts.

  • SME rate, the one most businesses use: COP 970,000 for the first class and COP 485,000 for each additional class, filed online.
  • Standard rate: COP 1,347,500 for the first class and COP 673,500 for each additional class, filed online.
  • Filing on paper costs more: COP 1,179,000 at the SME rate and COP 1,638,500 at the standard rate, for the first class.

Most businesses qualify for the SME discount

Yes, you can pay less. Nearly all our clients are micro, small or medium-sized businesses, so they usually qualify for the SME rate, roughly 28% lower than the standard one. You just need to prove your company size under Decree 1074 of 2015.

We file online to save you money and time

We submit your application digitally to the SIC. The online fee is lower than filing on paper, and the process moves faster, with no trips or paperwork.

Our fees

  • Trademark registration in Colombia: USD 345 + VAT. Covers preparing and filing the application, guidance from a lawyer, and walkthrough meetings.
  • Trademark clearance search: USD 112.
  • The official SIC fee is paid separately, directly to the agency.

Trademark clearance search: the step that saves you the most money

It's a check of the SIC databases to find out whether identical or similar trademarks, registered or pending, already exist in the same classes of goods or services.

It matters because the SIC doesn't refund the fee if your application is rejected, and the owner of a similar mark can oppose yours. Searching first tells you the risk upfront, so you can tweak the name or logo in time.

What we do in the search

  • We work with you to define the classes of goods or services that fit your business.
  • We look for identical and similar marks by name, sound and appearance.
  • We review every match class by class.
  • We assess the risk of the SIC rejecting the application or someone filing an opposition.

What you get

  • A feasibility report with your trademark's risk level.
  • The similar marks we found and why they could be a problem.
  • Our recommendation: register as is, adjust, or change the mark.

Steps to register with the SIC

  • Choose the name, logo and classes of goods or services.
  • Run the clearance search.
  • File the application online and pay the official fee.
  • Formal review and publication in the Industrial Property Gazette.
  • Window for third parties to file oppositions.
  • Substantive review and SIC decision.

Turnaround time

Timelines depend on the SIC and on whether there are oppositions or objections. Once granted, registration lasts 10 years and can be renewed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register the trademark myself?

Yes, the SIC lets you file online. Professional support helps you pick the right classes, gauge the risk, and respond if the SIC raises objections.

Does the registration cover other countries?

No. An SIC registration protects your mark in Colombia only. For other countries you need to register in each one or use international routes.

What happens if I don't register my brand?

Someone else could register it first and force you to rebrand, even if you were using the name before them.
